Hello all, I hope you can help, Just bought my Voyager and absoloutly love it, however week 1 of owning it, I go out to go shopping and when i switched the car on I had no power windows, blowers or radio cassette, I went straight for the fuse box only to find a small black box 4 pronged plug was loose in the fuse box, could not find where it went so I decided to park up the van, when I turned the key suddenly everything was working again, and I checked everything!! So ordered my Haynes manaul to find out what this box is and even if it belongs in the van! a few days later (Today) the wife is out and about when suddenly whilst she is driving she loses all Odomitors in the dash, Speed, Revs, Fuel, Temp, milage and gear selector. she coasts home with the hazards on and by the time I got there and turned the key, again all is well! I have just driven it to work and its fine, I am still waiting for my haynes but wondered if any of you have suffered similar issues with yours? thanks in advance. Mike.

Unfortunately, you are experiencing a body control module failure. You can try to pull the negative battery cable and let it sit (overnight) this may put it back on track for a while. Also check for dirty/loose connections at or near the battery or the BCM. If this is successfull, the problem will more than likely appear again several weeks or months later on. I have not been able to perform this reset by pulling the applicable fuse, as reccomended on this forum. Fortunately, the engine usuaully continues to run, but the lights, dash, windows, etc. will not work. Do you have an orbital (gel cell, spiral, "six pack") battery perhaps? There is a theory that the electricity produced from these batteries somehow effects the body control modules. They are expensive to replace, and application specific. If you are lucky enough to find a used one, the odometer will reflect the mileage of the van the BCM came from.

ill wait for my Haynes manual so i can locate the BCM and try these steps...

Regards
You don't need it (Haynes manual). Just take the negative cable off the battery, let it sit, and hook it back up. This will "reset" the BCM. You will need a 10mm wrench (or pliers, crescent wrench, etc.) to remove the battery cable from the battery. This should get things back to normal for a while. While you are under the hood, look for bad or loose connections, broken wires, dirty battery terminals, etc.

Keep us posted

Welcome!

Unfortunately a BCM [Body Control Module] for a 2001-2007 [4th Generation] model year Chrysler Minivan will not work for a 1996-2000 [3rd Generation] model year Chrysler Minivan of which your Voyager is. You will need to find a direct replacement for a 1996-2000 model year Chrysler Minivan, BCM unit.

:hi2: Welcome to The Chrysler Minivan Fan Club Forums!

Established in July of 2003, Glen Millar's Chrysler Minivan Fan Club has become the #1 online destination for owners and fans of America's favorite and best-selling minivan. We are very passionate about the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan, and Plymouth Voyager/Grand Voyager vehicles we drive. Now with over 10,000 members from the United States and around the globe, we hope that our collective experience can be of assistance to you with your own Chrysler minivan(s), and we look forward to learning from your experience as well. After all, the more that is shared, the richer our community becomes. Here is some information that you may or may not have already heard that will help you get acquainted with the club and the online forums:

As with any community we would ask that you review the legal and privacy policies for Chrysler Minivan Fan Club. The following link includes important copyright, affiliation and disclaimer information as well as the fan club forum's rules and guidelines/violation consequences. This information can be reviewed at http://www.chryslerminivan.net/legal.html. Click HERE to browse the Frequently Asked Questions portion of the site.

First a word about Technical Service Bulletins [TSBs] / Recalls. If you are new to the forum, please have your vehicle identification number [VIN] ready along with the make, model, trim and engine size [e.g. 3.3L V6]. A lot of problems can be resolved on a vehicle by making sure that it is up to date on all recall/TSB repairs. These repairs can be completed FREE of charge at your local authorized Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer. You can check the recall status of your vehicle by calling your service department OR by going online: To do so, have your VIN number ready and go to http://www.chrysler.com/en/owners/ for all Chrysler brand vehicles, and http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/ for all Dodge brand vehicles. For all Plymouth brand vehicles, please contact your authorized Chrysler dealer.

We would highly encourage you to pick up a Haynes/Chilton Repair Manual and/or Factory Service Manual [FSM] for your model year Chrysler minivan. They are available online, as well as at several retail auto parts stores. These books are a great reference and will save you a lot of time and trouble when working on your vehicle, it is money well spent! You may also wish to invest in one or more online services that offer the same or more information. A good one that I have had experience with is AllDataDIY.com. **Please Note: Third-party manuals are not guaranteed to have all of the information you might need to complete a repair, so you may need to consult several different sources in order to get the knowledge necessary to complete the job.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the forum's functions. Located at the top of the forum's page is the SEARCH function. This is a very powerful tool that can help you find the answer to several very commonly asked questions. I would advise you to make this your first stop before posting a new thread in the forums, as someone may have already asked your question previously and gotten an answer. You may have to try several different search terms, so please be patient! To say "Thank You!" to a member who offered useful information to you, you can click on the "Thanks" icon that appears in the bottom right-hand corner of their post.

Finally, I would invite you to join the Chrysler Minivan Fan Club Online Showroom. Should you like, please take a digital photograph of your minivan from the front driver's side corner. Then, all you need to do is email the photograph in an attachment to chrisjcarpenter-31y2@post.me.com, making sure to put your forum username in the SUBJECT line of the email. Your photograph will be automatically uploaded to the showroom. Once you're done, go to www.tinyurl.com/d39osq to view the online showroom and see your vehicle on display amongst all of ours! [If you'd like to see some examples of pictures you can always view the showroom first!]

Click HERE For More Information The Online Showroom

Utilizing the "User CP" link at the top left corner of the page, please fill out your user profile. In addition, it would be most helpful to us if you would please include your vehicle(s)' information year, make, model, trim and mileage in your signature so we may reference it if need be on your posts. [e.g. "1996 Chrysler Town & Country LXi 123,456 Miles | 198 683 kms"] As always, should you have any questions, please ask.

Again, welcome to the Chrysler Minivan Fan Club. :thumb:

I know right! People think I'm crazy for being a young'en and having two of them! They are absolutely brilliant for all they can do. Saved my skins on more than one occasion. You've got a brilliant van, in my humble OPINION... the 3rd generation vans are simply the BEST design... followed by the 4th generation.

You may just have a bad battery or a bad connection at the terminals. The computers on these vans are very sensitive to such things. Hold off on replacing the BCM just yet.

I would make sure the connections are shiny and tight first. You then can get the battery “load tested” at most auto part places for free. If the battery is more than 3-4 years old it may be on the way out.

If all else check out, keep in mind that the 97-99 vans are famous for having the solder connections on the back of the instrument clusters crack and this causes problems like you are having. You will find many posts on this issue by using the search feature on this board.

Welcome to the forum and keep us updated.

Actually, even though you are right about the 3rd generation vans having solder joint problems in the dash- the issues that the original poster is having are consistent with a BCM failure as DASander pointed out. The dash solder problem manifests itself in problems related to being unable to start the vehicle, requiring you to have to slam the dash with your fist a few times before the ignition switch will allow the key to turn the engine on.

just one last thing guy's, when i disconnect the battery, i take it it is just to disperce any charge residue so ten mins should be long enough, or would you recomend longer to reset the BCM?
Thanks again guy's.

My rule of thumb is a bit of overkill, but I do it anyway. I take the battery fully out of the vehicle and set it in the garage, I don't just disconnect the negative terminal. Then I leave the battery out for minimal an hour or so. Then I go in and put my foot firmly on the brake pedal for 20-30 seconds to discharge any remaining current left in the system.

Welcome to the Forum FatmikeT
Getting the Haynes manual is nice to have anyway, whether or not you need it now.

Getting back to the "BATTERY"; What kind do you have (brand), and How Old is it?

Get back to us on this.

Hello again all,

right i have reset the BCM so it will be a case of wait and see if it has worked, also i have a standered acid battery, not a gel cell one, and i had the battery and alternator checked over the weekend and they are fine, i think i have figured out what the black box is, a Relay, for what i do not know but discovered over the weekend that the radiator fans do not work so it could be the relay for this! does anyone have a relay diagram for a UK spec 3.3 LE 1997 so i can try to find out where this should go as the haynes manual does not include this?, i took the knee crash plate off but visability of the relay panel was still low and i could not see any obvious gaps etc..

Thanks again.
