My 2003 LXi FWD 3.8L continues to have engine misfires. They have been occurring off and on for 6 months. For the first couple of months I was having quite a few misfires but no check engine light. Finally at about 49K miles, the light came on and the O'Reilly Auto Parts analyzer said I had a P0303 misfire code. I replaced the No. 3 plug and subsequently the other five plugs with OEM Champion plugs. That seemed to fix the problem for a few weeks and then at about 50K miles misfires began again and the check engine lite came on, this time indicating P0302. I then replaced the spark plug wires with O'Reilly OmniSpark wires. In a few days the misfires were back and so was the check engine light.
Late in December at 54K miles I took my van to the Chrysler dealer who said that P0302 and P0305 codes were set and that the #2 & #5 plug wires were high resistance. I took the O'Reilly OmniSpark plug wires back and exchanged them for Borg Warner CH76168 wires. After installing them I still had misfires. Over the past few weeks the check engine light came on one day when it was misfiring badly and then back off the next day. Today at 55K miles I took the van back to the dealer who put it on the analyzer (at no cost) and found cyl #2 & #5 misfires. The service manager said that one of the coil modules fires both cyls 2 & 5 and recommended changing out the ignition coil. The coil costs between $60 & $80 so am willing to try that but am interested in what you guys may be able to recommend at this point.
THANKS A TON!
