I'm in the process of replacing the alternator on a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan (3.8L). The Haynes manual suggests that I remove the oil dipstick, but I've also seen posts in this forum recommending the removal of the EGR to make room for the alternator extraction.

What is the best approach?

I just did this and I could not get the oil stick out, worked 2 hrs. trying. Then I just unbolted the egr (which I replaced 6 months ago) and the alt. just comes right out. I would recommend it. YOu might want to have a new gasket, but I don't think it will be needed, those two bolts don't torque that much and mine looked like new and I reused it. I posted on the whole job and what is needed if you want to look it up. remove the two front bolts and rotate the alt away from the egr to easily unbolt the egr. you can loosen the bolt at the top of the plenum and just move it without removing it altogether.
