2014 Chrysler t&c accelerator stuck issue

1023 Views 28 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  guamusa653
So my neighbor has a 2014 t&c for sale. He has complained of an accelerator stuck/unwanted acceleration issue that has happened a few times. He hays the pedal will get stuck, or van will rapidly accelerate causing him to have to put in neutral and ride the brakes while the rpms redline. I did some searching and found this is a common, reoccurring, and very dangerous issue with these vans. I could find no recalls or fixes for this. Anyone have any way to fix or prevent this? According to all the complaints, it commonly results in accidents or worse. I appreciate any advice. Will all the complaints I saw online, I figure the fix would be figured out by now and widely available

It's actually a very uncommon complaint, at least on this forum. My guess is the issue is either the pedal position sensor or the electronic throttle body.
a runaway engine is very serious and dangerous, i've never heard of it happening on any of the chrysler vans, mechanical linkage or fly-by-wire

Please point me to all these complaints listed ...... I've never heard of it.

It’s most likely an issue with a floor mat, usually a universal fit one. Most of the Toyotas unintended acceleration incidents were due to that.

Here’s one site
A quick google search produces many results. Some from this website, which is what lead me here

Not likely the engine redlines with the trans in neutral. All Chryslers for the past 20 years will limit the engine to under 2500 rpm when the transmission is in park or neutral. Typically done by shutting off the fuel injectors so accelerator pedal or throttle body position are not involved.
@MattyB4 - Are you looking to buy the vehicle or to help out your neighbor? Curious as to as to why you are posting.

Keep in mind that the electronic throttle didn't show up until 2012 with the Pentastar. I think the 3.8 and 3.3 L maintained the cable linkage, I could be wrong though. Not sure about the 4.0L.

Seems like many of the complaints were pre Pentastar related and would have different design and issues sets.

Yes looking to buy. I currently have a Nissan Quest I am tired of throwing money at. I’d rather throw money at something else. This one hasn’t been driven in several months due to the safety issue of stuck/rapid acceleration resulting in some dangerous near misses

Cruise control involved, on, or comes on by itself? That's all controlled by the computer these days, no cruise control servo anymore, I believe.

That’s a good point. Cruise control wasn’t engaged when these incidents occurred. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t glitching itself on. But then pushing the brakes should disengage it

In a report I read, the cruise control engaged on its own, and wouldn't shut off.

2014 Dodge Grand Caravan:
I had just passed another vehicle, and had pulled back on the right side again, and was slowing back down to normal speed, when the car suddenly accelerated, and began gaining speed. When I looked to see what the gauges were reading, I saw the symbol for the cruise control was on. I didn't put it on. I cancelled the cruise control, but when I looked to make sure it was off, it was still showing. I cancelled it again. The red lightning symbol in parenthesis was showing, so I quickly braked and pulled over to the side of the road.

As much as I like cruise control, the fact that this is happening is scary. And if all I have to do is pull a fuse or disconnect something, that’s probably what I’ll do. Good info. Thanks
^^ I had an 82 Olds that had a cc glitch, it would also accelerate without my input so I pulled the fuse.
The majority of "un intentional acceleration" have been historically linked to users.

Rule out fat feet, wrong feet, foreign objects on floor, loose or floppy floor mats..... easier to blame the car for wrecking the garage, than stepping on the wrong pedal.

Very uncommon for Caravans. Happens more on Avengers. Issues is usually the throttle body.
Some of those complaints said that the pedal moved itself to the floor ??!! Is there a "motor" on the pedal that could drive it to the floor ??

How would one know that the pedal went to the floor without stepping it?
