I changed my motor oil and filter today on my 2019 Grand Caravan and was only able to add 5 quarts of oil to the engine and dipstick showed full. The manual says 6 quarts. ( i ran it for awhile and rechecked the oil level) dipstick still says full with 5 quarts. i dont want to overfill it. i poured the old used oil back into the bottle and it had nearly 5 quarts in it. Anyone else experience this ?

It calls for 6 quarts. You poured the old oil back into the bottles . The filter will absorb nearly a quart . 6 quarts is what it needs in the crank case with a filter .

When you pull the stick it will go past the hash marks and not be overfull

That's not right... Other layouts of the 3.6 have 5 quart fills, but our oil pan makes it 6.

Did you check before or after cranking? You should check it after about 10-20 seconds of running so it primes the filter. Could just be that you burnt a quart between changes.

The van is fairly new (30K) miles and i always checked the oil levels. The level was always at the full mark. I checked the oil (after changing) before running the engine and it was full. I ran the engine for 5 minutes and was hoping to see that i needed a quart…but was still full. Drove it for awhile and still showed full (on dipstick). Guess ill just keep an eye on it…but hate when this crap happens.

Just going by the LOF catalog where i work .We do lofs all day long and all the 3.6 I've seen called for 6 qts. This of course is verified when the vin is entered into the data base. Sorry if I've been misleading.

The 2019 DGC User Guide shows 6 qts/5.6l. That Guide is available online for downloading.

I think there is a 6 quart jug in the mix. :)

To the OP: What brand and product number is the filter you are using?

#8 ·
Naw, it's 5.6 liters. :)

Recheck the jugs you are using for capacity. Some are 4, some are 5 maybe. Nothing else explains it except wrong dipstick.

I’d just drive it a while and keep an eye on the oil level.

I’m trying to recall if my 2012 Routan was 5 quarts, as I don’t recall ever buying 6 quarts for it. My level was always correct.

When I bought my 2014, I bought a 5 quart jug for the first change and was surprised when I had to add a quart.

Now I use the 6 quart Havoline box for convenience.

Found this thread after doing some research online. This person seems to have the same issue with the oil level being full at 5 quarts. Just wanted to pass it on to others. (Over filling the oil can do engine damage too). Full=Full. 🤔

I think it's a misinterpretation of full on the dip stick . Safe vs full 😃

RockAuto Mopar #s
Tube: 5184929AF
Dipstick:. 5184013AI
They designate those as gas models. Dorman uses those #s also.
But Mopar also list 5184929AG and 5184013AJ for some reason.
Other than gas models??? Maybe you have a diesel dipstick. :)

Out of habit i always put the 5 qts in start it check the stick and add the other quart. And sometimes it looks like it's over filled .But I've never had a problem .

When the level is in the hash marks it's considered safe . I think some people take that as being full but is actually low.

Dipstick measurements per my 2016 DGC:

From collar to end of dipstick: 261/4"+

From collar to top of crosshatched range: 24"

Elevation of collar, while in the tube, is about the same as the ridge on the oil filler tube.

The product # 5184013AI is on the dipstick.

Hope this helps solve the mystery. :)

I wonder why they specify 6 quarts, instead of 5, anyway. Must be for off-roading :) or maybe it's because they are using 5W-20 oil and the longer oil change intervals. 5W-30 is my choice, it's allowed.

Don't do that too often or you will be over full. :)

Does your vehicle sound like a diesel sometimes?

Well the next time a van like ours come in for an lof with a 3.6 im going to pay real close attention and document 5 qts and 5.9 qts on the stick for the heck of it . 😆 just so i realize im not going crazy 😆

I swear a day don't go by we don't get one in

Is all the old oil draining out of the pan? Is vehicle level?

I changed my oil Friday evening on my 2014 TC. I let it drain for 2-3 hours while doing something else. Even though there was an unspent drip on the pan, I noticed there was no oil actively dripping from the pan when I re-installed the drain plug.

I refilled the van with (1) 5qt and (1) 1qt container of Mobil 1. I let the van sit overnight and checked it first thing Saturday morning. The oil level was perfectly at the high end of the "Safe" section.

I know -- Mobil doesn't have the proper certification(s) and isn't blessed by Chrysler to run in the 3.6. Excuse my lubricity faux-paux. Nevertheless, I figure there's no reason to change after running synthetic Mobil 1 in it for 185k miles. Whatever badness is going to set in from running uncertified oil has already taken hold.

^Good to know!

If motor oil isn't on sale, at a roll back price, or at an everyday low price, don't buy it. Find something that is. Mobil 1 is no exception there either.

No special ingredients in Mobil 1, if fact, they are willfully missing a few, apparently. :)

Pennzoil is probably the best synthetic oil but I stick with Valvoline Daily protection 5W-30 conventional with a bit of that marvelous synthetic stuff in it. It's often on sale at Walmart, just bought a couple of jugs.

Due to manufacturing tolerances, the 6 qts of oil can vary on height of the dipstick from different motors +/- 4.0mm. So please put the correct amount oil in your Grand Caravan - 6 qts.

The Pentastar upgrade motor found in 2016+' Grand Cherokee, 2017+ Pacifica, 2018+ Wrangler has the oil level reduced to 5.0 qts. This was accomplished with a different oil pan and a different dip stick with the oil level marked 7.45mm lower on the stick.

When you find it, tie a string to it, for next time. :)
