Yes, I believe that anytime the transmission fluid level is being checked after a minimum 15 mile/24 km trip, the fluid temperature is likely more like 170F than the 180F standard operating temperature, or the 200F heavy load/conditions temperature. It's the heavy duty cooling doing its job.

Measured my transmission fluid level today, 2022/365 , cold turkey, 5:00 pm, after an 18 hour shut down during mild temperatures. 10C / 50F.

94 mm. No leaks apparently, still have the original cooler lines. It had varied downward, and erratically, during colder weather which tells me more fluid was being retained in the transmission body during cool down at colder than say the temperatures today. That makes sense. I think I had a reading of 80 mm, certainly had readings in the 85 mm range during colder weather.

So observation:

at 75mph steady state trans sits at 140F
In stop and go traffic with 30-50mph speeds it holds about 160, I suspect on a hot summer day with AC on and residual heat from the road the trans will easily exceed 180-190F

I guess when spring and summer gets here we can compare transmission fluid temperatures. I do not usually have stop n go traffic except one afternoon a week and I have not ran the SG3 on that route yet. On my normal route home I have only seen 145* so far, and that is after 35 miles.

I imagine by the time you take the measurement, the temperature will drop quite a bit with the fans running full blast and the cooler doing its job.

So ..... getting a reading at 180F (normal operating temperature) could be a challenge.

Are stickies hiding from me again, or was this never stickied? As common as the question of how to check the fluid pops up, seems it should be.

Regarding checking transmission fluid levels.....

Paired with an OBDLink MX+ OBDII bluetooth device, I use the OBD Fusion app on my iPhone to determine the transmission fluid temperature on my '14 T&C.

@georgef provided some AWESOME instructions on how to create a custom PID in the OBD Fusion app to get your transmission fluid (ATF) temperature. I have also installed the Dorman drainable transmission fluid pan -- P/N: 265-833.

To check ATF levels, I drive the van for ~30 minutes and then park it on a level surface. I use the engine oil dipstick to measure the ATF level, in millimeters, in the pan. After measuring how far up the stick the ATF goes, I use this chart to assess whether my ATF is at the proper level.

EDIT: Removed indications the fluid level should be check while the engine is off.

I watch my trans temp every day, I got 60mi commute to work, when its 50F out it gets up to 150F, however when the outside temp is say 32F, the trans seems to hover around 125F. In the hot summer days I have seen it get up to 170-180 range. But 15mi drive barely gets it to 100F so I think it needs a solid 30min of driving to reach 120.

It was in the 30's F last weekend in Central Illinois. I took a two hour one way trip, mostly flat terrain, driving at ~60mph. My trans temps ranged mostly between 121 - 127 F.
