The compressor on my '96 3.8 litre isn't coming on when I press the A/C switch on the console with the fan on. I swapped out the A/C relay (in the relay & fuse box). Where do I look next? Is there a way to bypass the panel switch to see if everything else works? Or a way to check the coolant level without the compressor being on? Thanks.

it's probably low on refrigerant, need to get a pressure test done on the system.
it may have a leak.

Another common problem was the high side pressure transducer. If it is sending the wrong info to the PCM, the compressor won't turn on. The PCM gets the request from the ac control, but ultimately has total control over what the compressor does. It can be seen in the scanner data. Then there is the evaporator fin temp sensor. Done just as many of those. Start with freon level though first.
