I'm looking at purchasing T&C AWD minivan. During the test drive I noticed that while turning there was subtle vibration in the steering wheel much like having four-wheel drive locked in on dry pavement. Is this normal for a AWD minivan? If not, is there a likely cause?

AWD system on this van is 100% mechanical. Check tire wear and make sure that:

a) Tires are the same make/model and size

and

b) Least worn pair of tires is on the front.

My guess is that front tires are significantly more worn than the rears. If you drive with mismatched or significantly more worn tires in the front than the rear this puts huge load on the PTU (transfer case) and rear diff. Usually PTU gives way first and it is not a cheap part to replace -- junkyards want between 800-1200 for it. But you *WILL* know if it fails -- makes a loud banging clunking noise and renders the van undrivable.
