Bought a fuel tank cap for my 2000 Chrysler Voyager 3.3L at AutoZone. After some time I realized that the check engine light I was getting was caused by the cap. Anyone one know what brand cap to get that isn't $25 OE from the dealer that actually works?
take some petroleum jelly and lube the gasket on the old cap, also there's pin hole in the center of the cap - if you take a paper clip and carefully depress the valve while spraying some silicone lube (allow the lube to dry out completely before you screw on the cap) the old cap will be good as new (provided the seals haven't cracked/deteriorated)
there's no way you can be sure they are any good (or if the problem is with the gas cap or elsewhere in the system) other than that, if you have a yard near by might be worth a shot..
Sorry to hear that.
The above rehab procedure should work on aftermarket gas caps just as well as on OEM.. (unless you're returning the "new" cap, you can try the lube and see if it helps)
I currently own a 2002 chrysler voyager 2.4l and after reading through this thread, im starting to think that my original gas cap is causing my CEL to come on, checking with my OBDII scanner(actron cp9575), its throwing a P0456 code(small evap emmisions leak).
So i unscrew the cap out completely, then retighten while clicking it 3-4 times and its good to go and it clears the code, then 3-4days later, the CEL comes on again, and its the same code.. the OP is probably having the same issue, hope this helps. him and to anyone else who is going through the same issue.
What's probably happening is as the gas level drops in the tank, the resulting vacuum is drawing air in through the gas cap and causing the error code. Something similar happens to my van whenever I head up into the high country. I can almost guarantee I'll get a CEL. Fill the tank back up, put on the gas cap tight, and a little while later the light goes out.
