The rear heat shield is rattling. There is only one stud left, pointing towards the front of the vehicle, and the heat shield has rotted around it. The two to the rear that support the heat shield are missing completely. Are there alternatives to drilling the floor of the stow and go compartment? Is it double-wall, so I can use a rivnut, or am I going to have to worry about water penetration if I make the repair? The exterior of the compartment is coated with a rubber/tar looking product. If I remove the heat shield, is there a danger of setting the back of the vehicle on fire?

Been a while since I've been under mine. Hard to picture what you're talking about. Can you take a picture of each of the damaged/missing mounting points?

Most places the floor is not very deep. Studs mounting the front seat are only about 2" long, and that's one of the thicker areas.

I don't think this site has ever been friendly to any pictures I've tried to post. It's the last heat shield (behind the axle, and next to the resonator).

I hate to say it, but I did a pretty janky fix on this. I ended up poking through the rotted hole behind where the stud used to be. It didn't take much to poke through, and the floor is definitely not double-walled under the stow and go compartment. The carpet for the floor of the "trunk" has rust stains on the back of it from where the metal was thin. After I poked through it, those points where the studs were attached to hold up the heat shield behind the axle now have a 1/4-20 x 1" long bolt with two large stainless fender washers and a bunch of permatex gasket sealer in between. Then I added another nut, with a fender washer, and some silicone on it to hold up the heat shield.

The proper way would be to cut out the floor there, and weld a plate in with some new studs, but I don't have time for that. I work 12 hr shifts all weekend (Saturday-Monday) and then we leave for Tennessee on Tuesday. Tomorrow I have to replace the low pressure return hose for the power steering, and do a transmission service. In the last week or so, it has had a lot of work done in hopes that it gives us some trouble-free family memories.

Permatex and washer sandwich, that'll do. :p Surprised it's rusted all the way through already. That salt is no joke.

Well, check for rust on the back side of the carpet. If there is rust there, you might want to do something to patch the floor. There is a pretty good amount of wiring that runs under the carpet back there, and you probably don't want water getting in it. I'll have to keep an eye on my fix to see if it actually keeps the water out.
