It won't fully insert .. it is too long.
Just slip it down until it touches bottom and remove it. fluid should be about 1 1/2" on the stick when warm

How to accurately check trans fluid level with oil dipstick?

You can't!

What you can do, is use the engine dipstic, measure ATF when you know is a max. level and mark the engine oil dipstick, then you have the full mark for future reference. Transmission should be at the same temperature everytime to be accurate.

You can also get the transmission temperature and fluid level range using an inexpensive app and a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter, see: Trans temp w/ OBD Fusion app and OBD2 dongle

 

I do have a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter that I use with Torque Pro. You can see the fluid level range on that?
