Knock knock tick tick

I've pretty much lost confidence in this engine as the knock on cold startup has gotten much worse. The tick hasn't really changed in 10k miles but it is annoying and I'm pretty sure it's too late to save the cam(s). The knock goes away once it's warmed up and it actually runs nicely, other than the tick, but the power isn't what I think it should be.

I'm planning on replacing it with a used motor with a guarantee because it's not really much more expensive than doing the rockers, lifters and a cam or two. Here's a video, let me know what you think. (Hopefully this link works because I can't figure out how to post a video)

If there's something going on, a close look at the oil filter pleats will tell the story, like miniscule pieces of rocker arm glistening in the sunlight. Magnets in th oil pan help hide that evidence.
Yeah, but meanwhile it saves your oil pump. I wonder if the reason my pickup tube was clogged with filter medium was because of rocker bits going through it. And keep in mind, the filters bypass past a certain pressure.

Really? Filter medium in your crankcase? WOW, that would be circulated through your engine to get there.

What did your old oil filter look like? Bypass valve not working, over pressurized? Bad product?

This Amsoil video talks about crushed oil filters but I don't know how valid the reasoning is. The bypass valve appears to come into play a lot (40F and colder?).

The FRAM XG11665 oil filter I use has a plastic screen rotatable center core. I don't think all oil filters do.

Make sure the "O" ring is in the right groove per:

When I had cylinder #2 rocker arm going south, there were shiny minuscule flecks of metal n the filter media pleats. They reflected in the sunlight and were attracted to a magnet.

I never had any filter look damaged. Possible it happened in the first 33k miles before I got it. It was the first time I had the pan off. No noticeable specks either, even when I had the rocker issue.
Yeah when I got it I had the feeling that it was a fleet vehicle, the Carfax said personal use but I don't think so. It's obvious that it was maintained to some extent and if they had someone that was decent they could keep dealing with the common things until the point where it isn't worth it anymore and then fill it with 10W40 oil and send it off. Seeing a half dozen bad cam lobes and recently replaced rockers it sure looks like they had someone bright enough to think of putting a magnet in there so all those shavings didn't eat the motor up.
3 months in with 9k miles and the used motor has been flawless. Phew... Too bad the transmission decided to crap out on Tuesday :( It's crazy how it's going to cost more to solve this than it did for the motor. 180k miles and I'm about to have nearly what it cost new into it. Grrr
You sure it's gone? Fluid at a good level and you've been doing your filter on schedule? (Should be about to do your 3rd.)

Used transmissions are running about $1,100 to $1,500 here.

I changed filter and fluid at 157k when I got it then again at 172 when the motor was replaced. I did that because it shifted rough and I didn't know the history so I figured it couldn't hurt. It didn't help :( There were no codes and nobody really wanted to dig in and figure it out so I kinda resigned myself to having to replace it. Recently I've had to put it in N when stopped at lights because it wasn't fully releasing so I knew it was coming.

That's what good used trannies were going for not too long ago but to find a low mile unit with a guarantee it's gone up, and that $1k for labor puts it close to $3k installed. At that point another $1k for properly rebuilt makes sense (to me) over one that is still likely to self destruct at some inopportune random moment.

I guess there will be confidence in knowing that it's mostly refreshed and all I should be looking at for a while is wear items. When I'm doing one of those 500+ mile work days and I'm in some remote spot or stuck in tight traffic on a bridge in NYC I won't feel obligated to stare at the UltraGauge waiting to see a trouble code pop up.

Oh, you're up around NYC. It'd be a bit of a drive, but I found this listing on car-part.com:

Plus US Customs fees and 11+ hours in the car to go get it and it starts becoming less attractive. No guarantee also doesn't instill confidence. The win would be getting to keep the original and slowly rebuild it correctly.

Customs fees??

Ontario is a town in the northwest corner of Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 9,778 at the 2000 census, and 10,136 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the Great Lake on its northern border.

Oof, yeah I know the place. I didn't open the link because I saw Ontario. I went to the local guy this morning and saw that he's got a nice operation going with a clean rebuild room and all of the parts in stock. I'm (pretty much) ok with the cost because I think he does good work and seems to run a good business and I bet that doing a few a week he knows how to do it right.
