I have a 1999 plymouth voyager with a 4 cycl engine. It was leaking about a quart of oil every time I drove it. In the end, the problem was that the rear man seal was nearly all the way out of the bearing housing, so far in fact that it had grooved the flex plate.

The guy tells me that this is a common 4 cyclinder minivan problem, but why? What causes it? Is this from too much pressure inside the engine, and if so, why hasn't it done things like pop out the dip stick which I would think would be easier to pop out than the seal. But then the rear main bearing is full of oil which would imply that the seal feels the pressure of the oil not of just general crankcase pressure. Could it be it had too much oil in the engine?

Thank you for any ideas you may have.
