It's very hard to tell by sight what kind of oil it is, maybe even impossible. Going back and forth really isn't anything to worry about. I would only buy the van if they can fix the issue causing the check engine light and include an extended warranty that covers the engine from oil and mechanical issues without charging you any more money.

That's why I suggested the warranty. More than 30 days worth. Think one year at least.
