Back in the ‘80’s I recall working on engines from the ‘50’s to the ‘70’s. The blocks and heads were cast iron and thick, the rockers were heavy stamped steel, almost everything was iron or steel. We used 10w30 to 20w50 oils, real leaded gas, and no computers to get in the way. Yet most of these engines were in need of rebuilding at 75k to 100k, yes there were those that went much further but they were rare.

I agree with you that quality does not appear to be prevalent in todays world. But when I see the average of miles on vehicles overall as high as it is today I have to wonder if the auto manufacturers are doing something right. Having to repair a head really only sux because today it cost $3k or more when back 50 years ago you were looking at $200 tops.

I feel so lost in today’s automotive world, it seems like the more I learn about “the new ways” or “modern fluids” the more confused I get about it all. Real mechanics are few and far between, and getting fewer, it seems like working on cars is more about computer science than mechanics.
