For a year now, whenever I turn on the heater fan, there's a thumping sound under the right side of the dash. It used to come in groups of thumps but now there's just five or six, then it stops. Everything seems to work normally, air is diverted to floor/top vents according to the setting.

I tracked it down to an actuator that fortunately is mounted underneath the fan unit which is underneath the glove compartment. If I remove the cable to that actuator the noise stops, but I don't know what the actuator does. It looks easy to remove if that becomes necessary, at least the mounting bolts are easily reached. The part number is 4734225C.

The one thing I've noticed is that it's impossible to turn off outside air coming in, even if the fan is off. Maybe the actuator is related.

I'm not for sure, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that it's your fresh air door. I don't seem to get ANY airflow out of my vents unless the fan is on.
