Anyone tried the Valvoline "Restore & Protect" Synthetic oil yet? Claims to de-carbonize the pistons nearly 100%. Curious if this will free up our low tension piston rings and reduce our infamous oil use problem.

I'm probably going to hunt some down and try it on my next oil change for my oldest and highest mileage beast that has pretty much used a quart of oil per 1000 miles its' entire life!

I found Valvoline R&P on my Radar. Found best price was Walmart. I bought the 5qt jug but haven't installed it yet. Thinking I am going to use it on the RAM 1500 113,000 10W30

There is a neat video made

There's a whole exhaustive thread on Valvoline Restore and Protect on here somewhere, 3rd Generation maybe. Don't have time to do search.

I use Techron additive regularly to reduce carbon, but this Valvoline Restore and Protect looks like a game changer if the claims are true.

Admittedly, I did not search the 3rd gen forum... wondering specifically about our ~2005+ engines where Chrysler apparently moved to low tension rings and our oil use seemingly increased.

Seems like if this stuff can remove carbon from the ring lands then maybe our low tension rings might perform better...

M1-301 might also be a smart move with the first application or two of this Valvoine Restore and Protect as increased filter loading appears to be a concern when first introduced to highly carboned engines. M1-301 should offer more filter surface area over standard M1-204...

Here's the previous Restore and Protect Thread. Lots of information there. Perhaps some relates to less oil consumption. It does:
I think the benefit most people (besides clean freaks) are trying to get from using this oil is to reduce oil consumption. Does this oil do it by freeing up stuck rings or does it have high mileage seal swellers to help valve stem seals for example, or both? We shall find out as I track my oil consumption rates.
What does The Motor Oil Geek say, If you haven't watched the video posted by FabricGATOR above.

I use 5W-30 oil, from Natural Gas, in my 2016 DGC's crankcase. My dipstick looks perfectly clean. Where do they get these stained dipsticks? If so, maybe the stain is some kind of protection. :)
Castrol CAS11665 oil filter.

I use 5W-40 Walmart Super Tech Full Synthetic European Formula in my Jeep's crankcase.

Valvoline makes great oil, I used their Conventional oil and Daily Protection (a blend) oil for years.

Years ago, filling my some us auto at a US Mobil gas station, they had the Mobil 1 advert card mounted atop the pump. Showing a 'conventional' motor oil crankcase pan alongside a 'clean' Mobil 1 oil pan... WOW, what a difference the M1 makes, it is almost factory new!

... then my critical eye spied the gasket sealing surface area. Wait! an identical blemish, yet another, a unremoved fleck of gasket, same as the dirty pan right next to it as a comparison...

Obviously they were lying to us. They took a picture of a dirty oil pan. Then cleaned it out, poured a little clean oil, took another picture.

This was right around the time when Burger King and McDonalds, Wendy's was getting guff for the savory pictures on their advertisements and coupon flyers... The BigMac at the drivethrough didn't look much like the stack in the picture.

It seems that Geek has his own version of engine oil analysis. He does promote it, I can't fault him for that.

There must be some additive and fancy marketing... Is it really some new technology or is it Fea Soam and a marketeer.

Regardless, I am going to try/evaluate it costs about the same ish, so probably (hopefully) can't hurt

I've been using the Rotella T4 5W30 for summer and T6 for winter. Menards usually beats out Walmart and the additional 11% off. The T4 is $16.

I have 190k miles on my GTO, over 100k by my lead foot. I've only used Mobil 1 0W-40 (recommendation from GTO forum experts) changed every 5k miles and it still looked new under the valve covers and everywhere else when I upgraded the cylinder heads and intake manifold a few years ago. Doesn't burn oil, doesn't leak oil, and the catch can captures 1/4 cup from the PCV system over 5k miles. I also used Mobil 1 on my '87 Camaro that I daily drove plus drag-raced and drove on road-race tracks.

You can’t beat Mobil 1. Back in the 70’s the Brevard County FL Sheriff’s Office was enlisted by Mobil to experiment with the new Mobil 1 synthetic oil. At that time the patrol cars were hot seated by deputies which meant that these cars were being driven nearly 24 hours a day. After every 10,000 miles the oil was changed and after 50,000 and 100,000 miles the engines were torn down and evaluated to determine the amount of wear. The engines were determined to not have any noticeable wear at all. The engines were Chevrolet 350’s and Pontiac 400’s that were tested.
Since then, I have only used Mobil 1 and never had any oil related issues in my life.
