Has anyone ever replaced a window lift motor in one of the newer vans ?

Our drivers door window is wanting to stick occasionally. If it's not all the way down, I can grab hold of it and move it up and down a little and get it to work again, so I am pretty sure there is a dead spot in the motor. The dealership wants $250.00 just for the motor that I can get at the parts store rebuilt for $65.00, and after hearing that I didn't even ask them how much for labor.

Was just wondering if anybody has an idea of what I am up against if I do it myself. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated ! :help_wsig

Well crap, should have figured.

Did a little more digging and found this, a post on allpar...

Actually the power window motors in these generation minivans are probably the 2nd or 3rd highest failing item on these things, not too far behind the A/C compressor and the sway bar bushings.
It seems that these power window motors are especially weak, and replacement of anything in the door is a real pain. I guess I will find out and let everyone know how it goes. :jpshakehe

Follow this link to another perspective on the problem ....

I've never had the problem - yet - and can't personally vouch for the 'fix' presented there ...... however, I believe more than one have has success with that procedure.

Well, I am definitely a "tinkerer" as the guy put it, so you can bet I will give it a try, especially if it will save me some money !

Thanks willperk, you rock ! :headbange
There are a couple of other active threads Re similar window problems on allpar.com > forums > vehicle forums > minivans.

Post back and tell us what problems you find and what you did to solve them.

It looks like the passenger power window motor is out on our 01 T&C. I started with the switch, it seemed fine based on continuity through it in the 3 positions, so pulled the door panel off and did some live checks. I had 12vdc in both up/down positions (opposite polarity obviously for one position) so tested it with 12vdc straight to the motor terminals and the sound out of it was negligible.

Also, had 1.0 ohm through the motor which is probably about right, but I figure it's junk so I put everything back together and will get a replacement motor at some point.

Does anyone have a best source for a new replacement?

Go to http://www.rockauto.com .....
Enter ur vehicle model, year, etc, etc, then select
>Body-Interior ... > Power Window Motor

I have not replaced such on my '01 GC Sport, so cannot vouch for them ..... however, Rock Auto has a good reputation.

It might be of help for you to read this thread

I had seen that thread on allpar, but our's quit suddenly, so I figure it's not just gummed up.

I may pull it apart just to check, but with 3 kids at home time=money, so I think I'd rather just replace it and know it will work.

I finally got the time and mustered enough courage to look into the window problem, but it didn't last long. After breaking three of the mounting clips on the door panel, I went to the dealer and got some new clips, and talked to one of the mechanics that has befriended me (feels sorry for me really), and after crying on his shoulder he gave me a tool to remove the clips without busting them. Once I got the door panel off, and carefully removed the black plastic, paper or whatever it is - cover behind it, I decided that retreat is the better part of valor.

It took me half an hour just to get the black cover off, just knew I was going to rip it so I was very careful, and am going to ask the dealer where I can get some of the glue they use to hold that thing on with. There is no doubt in my mind that you could hold your wheels on with that stuff without lug nuts !
I used some spray adhesive to put it back on with, and hope that it holds. Once the cover was off, I still could barely see anything inside the door there is so much crap in there. It looks like the motor is at the bottom, and there is some kind of channel frame with a mess of wires that operate the window. From what I could see of the motor, there is no way I could remove any kind of cover on it to clean inside. Rarely do I back down from any kind of challenge like this, but I truly believe this is one to leave to the professionals.
My wife had already talked to the service manager about this problem when they did the last oil change, and he quoted her $250.00 for the job. Well worth it to me.
