I was given this van. It is in good shape but there is a worn bearing sound coming from the driver side of the engine compartment. I put the van in neutral while I was driving to see if the sound was coming from the engine or transmission. I think the sound disappeared until I put the car back in drive. I am going to check the fluids today for a start.

Take it for a short ride, put on a light glove and touch stuff like the rotors, the middle of the wheel where bearing heat would be, and on both sides of the front wheels. Anything hotter than the other?

If not, get the front wheels up off the ground with jack stands in the front past the sub frame, a floor jack under the sub frame, and wheel blocks in the back. Give a buddy a couple beers and have him put it in drive and get down and see if you can see or hear anything specific.

hi, thanks for responding - i drove the car for a few blocks yesterday, and checked the wheels for heat. there was nothing particularly hot. both sides were a little warm. I added 2 quarts of oil, and some coolant, and checked the other fluids. i guess i will get it off the ground and do what you suggested as soon as possible. i also have a 99 plymouth voyager. coincidentally both cars have the v6 3.3 engine and were made in canada. the voyager has been leaking transmission fluid. i have had to of the leaks fixed but i am still leaking. we did a gasket by the differential, and a cv joint seal. i was told there were 3 leaks by my mechanic. i will have to deal with it soon. by the way, what is the best way to check the tranny fluid? hot and in neutral?

hot and in neutral?
Believe it or not, on old cars they had the common courtesy to print the instructions on the dip'n sticks.

Should be hot and in park, but that's where to fact check me.

Transmission warm on level ground, brakes on, go from park to 1 through all gears and back into park. Check fluid.
