Oil Cooler Replaced. Thoughts on Failures.

The oil filter cover has to be tightened down enough that the contact surfaces (filter to cap - top and filter to housing - bottom) seal against an oil bypass situation. I think 15 to 16 ft. lbs. should do it. That's what I use anyway. A little shy of 18 ft. lbs. I do get a slight twist in the filter body, that is evident on removal. That's a good indication that it is tight when in place..

The filter body can vary in length by +/- about 1/16" so some may need the full 18 ft. lbs. Some filters, like the FRAM ULTRA XG 11665, have a rotating center core to facilitate tightening and to strengthen the filter (more interior support).

Add this filter to your cart. Clean it but never replace it. :)

For my 2016 DGC, the main sealing for the filter is the top and bottom flanges being sandwiched between the filter cover and the filter housing. The filter cover flange is spring loaded to help accommodate that. Tightening the cap will induce a twisting effect in the filter media when the surfaces make tight contact. The bypass valve fits somewhat loosely inside the filter otherwise.

Filters I have removed contain a slight twist like many others have experienced. Some don't apparently, possibly not tight enough or a short filter body.

I guess it's called a cover because it does more than cap the space. It contains a spring loaded center core which is a pressure relief valve, and a spring loaded flange, to assist in the sealing of the filter body.

Flange to flange at the top and flange to housing at the bottom. The oil way for the oil to get through is via the filter media unless the bypass valve is open.

That's the way I see it anyway, using the FRAM ULTRA XG 11665 filter. Maybe some filters have a tighter seal between the bypass valve and the filter body, but I doubt it Would it even be effective? I have an extra cover and have had it apart, checking it out, filter on, filter off.

Flange for cover goes against this spring and clicks into place (4 tabs)

Are they a good / better quality gaskets or should one go with Mopar. Most coolers, Chinese or whatever, include a gasket set.
