speedometer not working

I was driving along at 70MPH when tack & speedometer quit, pu;lled over and shut off hoping computer would reset, when I restarted only the tack works. I did some searching and most suggest it would be the output speed sensor, checked the wire connectors on both input and output looked good so replaced the output sensor, still no good, pulled the fuse on the IOD for 15 minutes and replaced, that didn't help, pulled the connections off the computer by the battery and they were all good, tried to get codes but can only get "LINK" message from my reader. The transmission shifts normal if you don't get on the gas heavy but if you get after it, it doesn't want to shift until you let off it a little. Does the input sensor have anything to do with the speedometer, all I have read is it controls the trans shifting which apparently I need to replace anyway. Any other suggestions as to solving my problem would be great.

Try an instrument cluster self test. Push in the trip and reset buttons. Within a few seconds the instruments will cycle through a test. If the speedo doesn't move you need a new instrument cluster. If it does move the problem is elsewhere.

There are other ways to read codes. Autozone and others will connect a scanner and read them for free. You can read the basic MIL codes without a scanner using the key dance and either counting the Service Engine light flashes or on a digital dash read the "P" codes on the odometer readout.

I have done the cluster check and the tack and speedometer went through each step as they should so I suspect there is a problem elsewhere. I replaced the input speed sensor this evening and still no success. I will find someone to try and read the codes. If someone has an idea, I will try it.

Had a problem similar to this. I lost tach and speedometer. Ended up replacing the cluster with one from the junkyard to fix the problem. Everything else checked out ok. Did you check the solder joints on the cluster?
