Testing a starter motor

Can you test a starter motor without it being connected to all of the circuitry? (From a 1993 T&C, 3.3L.) Haven't tested yet on an auto battery, but just on a 10 Amp battery charger. Not enough power?
And which terminal is the positive? (I suspect that the one with the stud is the ground, or do I have them turned around?)

Thanks much, Edy.
So does the starter motor run only when the solenoid is engaged? (I was thinking that the solenoid just thrust the gear out to engage the flywheel. That is, I was thinking that I could spin the motor w/o engaging the solenoid.)

Thanks all. Apparently the modern starters are nothing like what I was used to growing up, like the 6 volt MoPar starter in my 46. So now I know that I cannot use this 93 Chrysler starter for what I was thinking. (Building a motorized hitch buggy to move a small camper around inside a storage area. Was going to just run it off of the camper battery.)

When testing off the vehicle, the starter needs to be secured. The initial starter kick will send the starter flying to the extent you may not be able to hold it by hand or foot.
Yes, I have done it in the past, just not with this one. But it's good that you stated that here, for the unsuspecting ones. (A 3/4" drive drill kicks a pretty big wallop too, by the way. Saw a guy get pinned between two studs on a construction job with on of those once.)
