I just put this in this weekend. For anyone with an ‘11-‘13, remember to also buy six bolts to attach the new cooler to the oil filter housing. They don’t come with the new cooler, at least not the one from RockAuto.

They are M6x1.0 bolts, 16mm long. Factory are Torx pan head but good luck finding that at your local hardware store. I opted for hex flange head bolts over Phillips pan head since the Phillips would be a pain to torque.

Did anyone happen to check the plate cooler before bolting in in place? Checking mine and finding the base is slightly bowed. I don't know if this forces the seals to work harder to try and maintain the seal or if this could be part of the issues causing the leaks, assuming your leak is coming from the cooler to housing and not the cooling to block surfaces.

I sanded the base of the cooler with a granite plate and some 400-grit paper. You can see that it was in fact out of flat. What I don't know now, is if I should reinstall this or not. i can always sand it with some finer grit if needed. I don't expect that it needs to be a full-polish, but I had a little fun trying to get it flat.

If you got it good and flat as you think you do, the gasket will take up the unevenness left by the sandpaper.

Thank you, Sienile.

I am doing my Dorman housing conversion and hoping to stop leaks for good this time. How clean do these ports have to be for the seals to give a good long lasting seal? I had a far east knock-off installed for a while but the seals on that let go and a leak started.

It is very difficult to get down in there and scrape the surfaces clean. I used a plastic razor blade I am wondering if I have these clean enough for a good seal?

Should I resist the temptation to use a little RTV and help hold the seals in place?

RTV may actually make the seals fail faster because the gasket would be wedged between the cooler and the flexible RTV instead of the solid metal of the block. Just make sure there is nothing making the surface too uneven, like remnants of the old gasket or gouging from a razor trying to get it off. I'd advise against getting the sandpaper out for that, because unlike the cooler block, you can't be sure you will wash out all the grit and you do not want that in your oil. Looks like they are good, just wipe them clean before you set it in place.

Amazon is showing a couple, non Dorman?, aluminum oil filter housings.

I've seen those, but given the reputation of the plastic Amazon specials, I wouldn't be surprised if it had metal shavings inside them. Definitely inspect one of those thoroughly before installing, and if it comes with a filter, throw that trash out and put a good one in.

Aren't we replacing (good?) Chrysler oil filter housings with (better?) aftermarket ones (Dorman?)? :)

What makes you think the Chrysler cooler is better? Dorman products are hit and miss as well. Actually, there shouldn't be much to go wrong with a metal cooler.

Chrysler isn't scoring any points, in my books, with this whole crappy design. Quite frankly, their use of plastic (to cut down weight/cheapen things up?) sucks.

The Dorman metal one is the preferred option. I've not yet heard of anyone using those metal Amazon knock offs, but the ones that had used the plastic ones often had issues before their first oil change after installing it. So yeah, I don't trust those cheap parts.

Likely has the oil cooler included, like some Chinese competitors on Amazon have. Makes sense.

Current one fits all of them, you just have to buy the parts separate - just like you would have to do if your '14+ unit was destroyed beyond usability.

It will be nice not to have to track down all the extra parts though. Because of the broad compatibility, I can assure you it will not come with sensors, especially not a temp sensor because those are different depending on what it goes in.

Looking in the comments of that video, someone said the original Dorman cooler adapter is on backorder until mid June. Anyone having issues finding them, well, there just aren't any out there.

The way RockAuto’s stock works is strange. At first I saw that the housing was out of stock. Then a few days later it came back to stock. Then a day later or so it was out of stock again and then I kept checking their page multiple times a day and about 1-2 days later it showed back in stock and I bought it.

The guy said he contacted Dorman directly, not RockAuto.

Same scenario when I got mine from RockAuto, except I actually ordered it twice. First time, I got a mail the next day saying "too many people clicked the link at once" and all bought the same last unit. Saw it a few days later, it disappeared before I hit the add to cart button. A few days after that, it's back in stock and the price dropped. So I got it for $10 less than I had originally thought I bought it for.

I have a 2013 Grand Caravan and it says this housing doesn't fit mine. What would be the difference after the 2013 model year? Physically this part looks exactly like what is in my van, except that mine is plastic of course.

Cooler ontop is different. AFAIK you can install the 2014+ housing but then you’ll need a new cooler as well.
