Does anyone know if Chrysler dealerships let you bring in your own oil for them to change (or is that up to each dealership individually)?
It should not be a problem. None of the dealers or oil change places I've dealt with passed any remarks about using the oil I brought in, instead of what they have in stock. It happened twice, though (at 2 different shops), that the dealer forgot my oil was in the van and used their oil. When I spotted the oil still sitting behind the driver's seat, in spite of the note on the work order, they drained their oil and put in mine without no complaint from them. That's been my experience in Canada, anyway.

I ran my 1998 ES model on Mobil 1 since its first oil change, and my 2012 R/T got Mobil 1 the first time I had its oil changed as well. You get a discount on the oil change when you bring your own oil, but it's generally less than the price of the oil.

That's been our experience too

So I messaged Motorcity Mechanic about it (the guy who does all the mopar videos on youtube). Here is what was said:

Me: Hello, I enjoy your videos on youtube. I Just have a quick question about the oil filter housing on the pentastar 3.6
I have been reading that when replacing the oil filter, some people experienced oil leaks due to the filter housing cracking.
In some cases, the oil leaks were substantial. Have you experienced this?
Thanks.

Motorcity Mechanic: I haven't seen any oil leaks because of the oil filter being changed and cracking the housing. The leaks I have seen seem to be the oil filter housings themselves....seems to be at the seams where the parts are fused together. I'm sure that it someone really tightened down on the oil filter cap that anything could be possible due to the twisting effort and the filter neck being tall.

Me: Thanks. The reason i ask is because on a forum that I'm on, there is a thread about people who have experienced it. What would you recommend in order to avoid cracking the neck?

McM:I would have to think they are over tightening the filter cap. Other item that might help is lubing the o ring on the cap when replacing it. A small coat of oil would do the trick or grease. Anything to allow it to be removed easier next time. Strange that I haven't seen any with the issue at the dealership and we do a lot of 3.6 oil changes.

These are failing even when filter cap is under tightened, especially on the early 2014 3.6 jeeps. Those forums also mentioned similar wording as:
" The leaks I have seen seem to be the oil filter housings themselves....seems to be at the seams where the parts are fused together"

I subscribe to him on YT, hes got a lot of good videos.

I do find his explanation odd...how else would the fused seams leak then if not from the twisting forces exerted on the housing during install and removal of the filter cap? Could it be the pressure on cold start up?...90+ PSI is high...

I wonder if the leaks maybe caused by stripped or cross threads on the filter housing. I'm sure after 10-20 oil changes I could see this happening if someone is in a rush or doesn't slowly check to make sure the threads are flush before they start to tighten the housing. Combine that with the possibility of nicking the o ring or reusing the old o ring.

Chime in if you feel differently.

The original part 68105583AA had weak spots along the welded plastic seam. There are photos in that huge Jeep forum thread. The redesigned part 68105583AE has resolved this issue. When this problem first appeared, some unlucky Jeep owners had the repair done using the same flawed part, before the redesign. This issue could have been better handled by FCA. I'm not saying they should recall vehicles with the original part#, but they could offer an extended warranty on that part, like they have done with the cylinder head and in the past AC compressors.

Plastics are great materials, gas tanks for instance are much better made of plastic than steel. There is nothing wrong with the plastic oil filter cap either, but the oil filter housing should have been made from cast aluminum or similar material, there's too much heat and stress for it to be made of a 2 piece plastic assembly welded together.

This sounds like a serious candidate for a spin-on oil filter adaptor kit ... I'd be all over that.

I was at NAPA yesterday and got 10010 cartridge for the GC ($9.00) and a 2050 spin-on for my Uplander ($2.95).

Swap filter in GC .. time consuming procedure with temperamental plastic bits --- Swap filter in Uplander ... 30 seconds. Progress .. I think not.

How do I know if I've got the redesigned part? I've got a 2014 Touring

If it was built after 1/20/14, you have the latest version, otherwise read the service bulletin earlier in this thread.

Just found out that my 2014 T&C is leaking oil. It's still under the 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. Taking it to the dealership to have it fixed. Anyone have any luck with getting this issue resolved without paying for it? I'm assuming the warranty covers everything. I have gone to outside shops for oil changes, but I wouldnt think that would void the warranty.

It shouldn't if you have the records. Is it leaking from the filter housing? What is the build date? Don't drive it if leak is so bad that you would be too low on oil.

Myself and several coworkers all have 2014 Caravan's in numerous submodels. One of the first guys to own one, had oil light come on and took it home only 1-2km away. Called dealer saying oil everywhere around housing, they asked him to drive it into town approx. 10min. He told them to bring flatbed and tow it there. They found crack and replaced something around filter whether housing or cap I'm not sure.

Fast forward 1 year my van is at same dealer for 3rd oil change @ 15,000km (first 2 done at another original purchase dealer). Wife goes out to leave an hour later, van covered in oil prints outside and inside, kind of pissed. Starts engine, no oil pressure warning on display. She turns it off, goes back to service counter. The first rep tells her its fine, just need to drive it and will turn off when pressure builds up. She refuses, asks service manager to come out. They start it, same warning. They go get the mechanic, start engine again, he is baffled. Takes van back into shop. They pull filter and find it is the earlier model which is 1/4" longer I believe and in this case installed upside down. Now the lube tech(young uneducated student hired 4 days ago), overseeing shop mechanic, shop foreman, service advisor, and service manager all present to explain to wife what happened. She lost it, calls me, I get told minor issue, no damage possible. Gets out to van, now more oil covered hood, door, interior panel, dash, and seat. they get detailer out and he takes back to shop and gives a quick cleaning. Now over 2 hours have passed. They explain they could have charged for second oil change. She leaves furious. I call managers, where they explain simple mistake. I told them its going on record and FCA will be notified. After long talk, I had to explain RPM vs lubrication and what 5min here and there can do with no oil pressure on a near new $30k vehicle. The dealership owner wrote a letter to us, offered several free oil changes. I was in there later to redeem a past gift card for some product only, to never go back again, find out there was a change in staff, tech fired, service manager fired, several worried employees.

There are 3 dealers within a 1/2mile radius and none stock Mopar 5W20 oil, "only in bulk", which is more B.S., because that isn't even Mopar oil as I have recently found out in person.

Point of this story. Use correct oil filter for your model housing, install filter correctly, replace o-ring, torque cap properly...do it right, do it yourself.

I have a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. This issue just happened to me. Oil leak, dealership fixed the "Oil Cooler Housing" and said they see 10 a week at least.
At least 10 a week scares me. Does anybody know if this is covered under powertrain warranty, or just the 3/36?

They sold hundreds or thousands of those vans and they are at the point where that housing is cracking.

I think if i owned a 2014 I would insist that they change the housing before it cracks. That would possibly avoid any panic situations as described by the other posters.

The newer vans have the longer oil filter with that o ring at the top which means you can only install the filter one way.

I still do my own oil changes for that reason, relatively simple and to insure it's done right. Changing the oil filter housing is not so simple though.
