I have a third gen 1997. It has the plate between the solenoid pack and the transmission. It's called the "sound cover attaching plate" and is shown on Fig 18, page 21-84 of the 1997 factory service manual. The picture shows the installation of two identical gaskets, one on each side of the plate. I ordered a couple of extra gaskets so I'll put it back the way it was and put the sound cover back on. The cover is pretty heavy and thick to keep the valve noise down. I read here where the 4th generation did away with the cover and plate and that the newer packs don't make a lot of noise anymore. I may not need it, but it shouldn't hurt to put it back on. I saw where the same solenoid pack was used all the way up to at least 2013.

I have a problem with the van going into limp mode once every week or so then works ok after I shut it off, let it cool down and then start it back up again. I redid some splices in the wiring harness (that looked just fine when I cut them open) and I'm replacing both the input and output speed sensors, the solenoid pack and also have new connectors for all of them. The solid state radiator fan control has also been burning out so I bought a new fan assembly and I noticed one of the pins on the connector to the fan control looked burned so I replaced that connector also.

I also bought an SUV to use as a support vehicle for the van when I need to get more parts.

Hey Robert574,
Welcome to the pit crew.

So you got a spare SUV for when the van is on the skids... ugh.

There are a lot of helpful folks here and we are glad to help get that mini up and running , dependable like.
All we ask is that you return here from time to time and let us know what information is helpful and what didn't really work out for you. Your feedback helps us to help one another.

Yes, the original solenoid pack had a plate between and the upgraded solenoid for about a hundred dollars (amazon) that I have seen is without the plate.

I'm not sure what the criteria is for the PCM to trigger "Limp Mode". Could it have something to do with overheating of the transmission? Is there a tranny temp sensor? You mentioned that occasionally it goes limp and then works fine after a cooling period. Also you have evidence of hard running cooling fans... I wonder if your radiator could be, have diminished heat exchange due from too many bugs stuck in it, not being serviced (flushed), etc.

Where are you located in USA. cold, cool or temperate climate? How long has this been occurring and is it getting progressively worse?

Again, welcome. Look forward to hearing more about it.
Cheers!

Where is the Soelnoid Pack on my 2001 Caravan?

My 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport 3.3L went into Limp mode after my A/C unit went out. The Transmission place wants $550 to replace the transmission Solenoid Pack. He told me on the phone, if I recall right, mine was inside the transmission pan. I have removed it and the fluid. On this thread it seems its supposed to be reachable from the top. But for the life of me, I am not seeing the same bolts and setup as the pictures on this thread. Could the transmission guy be right and the big unit underneath my van is the Solenoid Pack, where the transmission filter plugged into? I just haven't found any place where someone shows or states its located in the transmission pan.

No, the unit inside the pan is the VALVE BODY and I strongly suggest leaving it alone unless you have convincing evidence there's a problem with it.

The solenoid pack is mounted on the outside of the transmission, drivers-side front. Look down next to the battery, under the radiator hose and you'll see it just above the front edge of the trans pan surface; it has a large electrical harness connector mounted to the top of it held in place with an 8mm bolt. Sometimes there is a sound-deadening cover over them, depending on the application.

I found it, a lot easier to find when cleaned up. Still a challenge to get out. Ended up removing battery, holder and removed two hoses just above the sensor. Made getting sensor out a lot easier.

Still I am wondering. Did I remove the right part? I mean, what part does Valve Body hold that I thought the Transmission Shop was going to replace in that area. I know he said Shift Solenoid B Malfunction. Same thing my OBDII reader says.

My van became stuck in limp mode at the same time or around the same time as my A/C compressor starting freezing up. The Transmission Shop said the two were unrelated. Odd though. Double Whammy.

Thank you.
