Replace cruise control switch

I have a 2012 Grand Caravan that the cruise control doesn't always work. I took it in to the dealership, and after working with Chrysler on it, they determined that the cruise control switch needed to be replaced.

At the time, it was back ordered, and the cruise started working again, so I didn't worry about it.

As you can guess, it started acting up again, and I have moved so the nearest dealership is over an hour away. Does anyone know how hard it is to replace the switch? I have found it (pn 56046094AE) on Amazon, so getting it isn't a problem.

Thanks

*I think* it's just a case of popping off the trim piece around the switch and removing the old one and replacing it. Not sure if there is anything that needs to be done with the airbag, although it wouldn't hurt to remove the battery and let it sit for a bit.

If you still have warranty, I'd try and get it done through that.

Switch ..... maybe ..... does the cruise light work, if so, not likely a switch that engages the cruise control problem. Are your brake lights working, if not, then the brake light switch may be the problem. Servos have a habit of going as well. Then there's those testy vacuum lines and vacuum storage to consider. Does the cruise work intermittently or is it out always?

Has your vehicle been worked on recently, especially in the area of the cruise control servo and vacuum lines?

You may be barking up the wrong tree with replacing a switch that was working, in spite of what the Dealership said.

the service manual mentions this for the switch:

WARNING: Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable before beginning steering wheel removal or installation. Allow the front airbag system capacitor to discharge for two minutes before removing the steering wheel or any front airbag system component. This will disable the front airbag system. Failure to disconnect the battery could result in accidental front airbag module deployment and possible personal injury.
Do not place a non-deployed airbag face down on a hard surface as the airbag will propel into the air if accidentally deployed, and could result in serious or fatal injury.

1) Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable before beginning steering wheel removal. Allow the front airbag system capacitor to discharge for two minutes before removing the steering wheel or any front airbag system component.

2) Remove steering wheel air bag.

3) Disconnect electrical connector (1) from speed control switch (3).

4) Remove screws (2) from speed control switch (3).

5) Remove speed control switch (3) from steering wheel.

Maybe disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and see if a reboot fixes the problem. The switch started working before for some reason. Could be one of those glitches that happen from time to time.

Here's some Dodge Journey experiences that you might relate to: http://www.dodgejourneyforum.com/topic/4421-cruise-control-not-working/

Some diagrams: https://www.google.ca/search?q=2012...ource=univ&sa=X&ei=3rH8U4rCItSAygSo_oGICA&ved=0CE0QsAQ&biw=1422&bih=750&dpr=0.9

I suggest contacting Chrysler Cares on this Form to see what the likely cause is and if there is any "goodwill" warranty for the problem since you recorded the problem previously. Then, someday when you are near the Dealership, get it fixed.

Did anyone have success at fixing this issue by replacing the cruise switch?

My dealer replaced the clockspring and brake light switch, but it hasn't helped. I've got a 2011 GC, cruise works fine 50% of the time, the other 50% the light won't even come on, OR it does come on and when I press "Set -" it shuts cruise off. I've always thought it was the clockspring because if I crank the wheel to the left, I can usually get it to turn on, but they just replaced it.

Any ideas?

I just had the same issue develop with cruise control on/off button working intermittently on my 2014. By that, I mean that the cruise control icon did not appear in the EVIC display when I pressed the on/off button. All the non-cruise steering wheel buttons worked just fine.

Dealer replaced the cruise control switch today, saying that they had determined that the original switch was shorting out. The repair was covered under my Maximum Care warranty. Without the warranty it would have cost $180 parts & labor. Will post an update if it turns out to be something else.

I forgot about this thread, but changing the switch did fix my issue.

It was pretty simple, I disconnected the battery for 10-15 minutes before I started to allow the charge to dissipate in the air bag. Then I took out the two bolts that held in the air bag. The screws that hold in the switch are behind a small cover on the dashboard side of the steering wheel.

Since my nearest dealer is now a hour away, I got my switch off of Amazon. It works great, except for the fact that it is green instead of blue like the old one. Even though the part number on the switch is the same. But it isn't a big enough deal for me to worry about it.

Not all 5th gen vans have the push button cruise switches, many have the lever type cruise switch.

finally got around to buying a new switch for my 2011 GC. Bought the part on Amazon for $37, came from an Auto Parts store in Ohio. Genuine Mopar part for less than 1/2 what other outlets wanted. Had to remove the airbag, but didn't have to disconnect it. Popped the little plastic tab off the back of the wheel to loosen the switch bezel assembly. Straight swap out. Looks identical to the one I had, works perfectly, haven't had a single malfunction so far.
